New Exhibit
NOT JUST CHICKEN FEED Introduced in the last half of the nineteenth century as a replacement for barrels, feed sacks’ real appeal began during the Great Depression, when frugal housewives realized they had a ready source of cloth for use in their homes. Feed sack companies knew a great marketing opportunity when they saw one and began printing sacks with quilt squares, stuffed toy patterns, and floral and geometric designs. The use of these sacks for secondary purposes reached its peak in the 1940s. One mill was making a thousand different color designs. Another included a free booklet in its 100lb bag of hog concentrate, “100 Ways to Use Feed Bags for Household Uses.” This exhibit includes several examples of feed sacks and feed sack clothing.

Brown Bag Lunch Programs
The monthly Brown Bag Lunch programs engage presenters and attendees in informal opportunities designed to expand awareness and understanding of Maine's rural past, present, and future. During this fiscal year, we are fortunate to have gained the financial support of several commercial sponsors whose contributions defray costs associated with the events. These sponsors are Pat's Pizza of Orono, Foxcroft Veterinary Clinic, Griffin and Jordan, Attorneys at Law, and Tilton's Auction House. There are currently no Brown Bag Lunch lectures to display

Holiday Shoppe
12/04/2010 at 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Just in time for the holiday season, the old-fashioned shoppe brings together 22 Maine crafters and artisans to display and offer their unique goods for sale. The event is free and open to the public, with plenty of free parking, says museum director Patricia Henner. Among this year’s shoppe offerings are maple sugar products from Freyenhagen Family Farm, wholesome breads from Daily Bread, in addition to items hand-knitted and felted by the Friday Fiber Friends, along with wreaths, reproduction toys, woven rugs, and handcrafted soaps and jewelry. Edibles such as fresh cow and goat cheeses from Olde Oak Farm in Orono will be available for purchase. Black Dinah Chocolatiers of Isle au Haut will be selling scrumptious hand-crafted chocolates. Those who attend are sure to discover wonderful gift ideas, as well as Maine’s thriving community of crafters. Good tidings and cheer will also be present. More information is available by calling the Page Farm and Home Museum at (207) 581-4100. The farm and home museum Web site (www.umaine.edu/pagefarm) also has details about its many public outreach programs for young and old.
